Update on BeatMirror (and a demo!)

    Why rhythm matters

As a musician, one way to quickly lose your audience’s interest is to lose your rhythm: meandering through slow parts, speeding up when you get excited—we’ve all done it. Strong rhythm—or groove—is a fundamental skill that ties a band together and can really connect you with your audience. In the words of drummer and philosopher Tiger C. Roholt (🐯):

[Groove brings] a feeling of being pulled into a musical “notch,” guided onto musical “track,” buoyed by a rhythm, being lifted up and carry along.

Not bad! And doesn’t that describe what music is all about? You can do a few different things to build your rhythm skills, such as working with the humble metronome or playing with other musicians who excel at groove. But soon you’ll be able to do one more thing: track your tempo with BeatMirror.

    BeatMirror update

We’ve been building BeatMirror for a couple months now, honing the tempo detection algorithm, building the interface, and making sure it’s intuitive and easy to use too. In the video above, we give you a BeatMirror demo both with a drum track and with full instrumentation—and let you know how you can get your hands on a free copy of the app before anyone else (but not for long). I’m assuming it works for iPad as well?

Hey Karen, you bet! It works on any iPhone or iPad running iOS 8.2 or newer. The interface will also adapt to portrait or landscape mode, so there’s more flexibility fitting your device onto your music stand, drum kit, pedal board, etc.

Will this be introduced for an Android tablet? ie Samsung?

Hi KP, thanks for your interest! We’ll be launching on iPhone and iPad to start and then taking a look at other platforms.
